CREATING YOUR PAST: EXPLORING FAMILY HISTORY THROUGH WRITING

In this one day workshop tutor Candice Kent we will use Lucy Boston’s award-winning series of children’s novels, The Green Knowe, as a point of departure.  The ancient house of the title is based on Boston’s former home, The Manor, in Hemingford Grey.  The novels are peopled by imagined former inhabitants of The Manor, the forebears of the novels’ protagonist, Tolly.

Whilst the writing activities will not be restricted to children’s literature, Boston’s books serve as an excellent illustration of one approach to the process of engaging with family history and how this relates to place. In your own writing you will explore imaginary conversations with your ancestors, or with fictional ancestors, and reflect on the links between historical past, landscape and building history.

Refreshments will be provided through out the day.
